Who doesn't need to file iXBRL?

Not everyone does — and we'd rather tell you that plainly than sell tagging to someone with no filing obligation. If you're on this list, you likely don't need us. Verify your own position with HMRC and Companies House before spending anything, here or anywhere.

Groups that generally have no iXBRL obligation

Sole traders

No CT600, no Companies House accounts

Sole traders aren't companies — you report through Self Assessment, not Corporation Tax, and file nothing at Companies House. No iXBRL is involved anywhere in that process. If you incorporate later, that changes from your company's first accounting period.

Ordinary partnerships

Partnership returns aren't iXBRL

General partnerships (not LLPs) file a partnership Self Assessment return, and the partners report their shares individually. No Companies House accounts, no CT600, no iXBRL. Note this is about ordinary partnerships — LLPs are different (see below).

Unincorporated charities

Charity Commission, not Companies House

Charitable trusts and unincorporated associations report to the Charity Commission, not Companies House — no iXBRL accounts filing. HMRC only comes into it if a notice to file a return is issued (for example on non-exempt trading income); a charitable company is a different case entirely.

Individual landlords

Personal property income is Self Assessment

UK individuals with rental property report through Self Assessment — no iXBRL. This changes if the property sits in a limited company, and non-UK resident companies with UK property income have been in Corporation Tax (CT600 + iXBRL) since April 2020 — see our non-resident landlords section.

Overseas companies, no UK presence

No UK registration, generally no UK filing

A foreign company with no UK establishment, no UK-incorporated subsidiary, and no UK property income generally has no Companies House or CT600 obligation. UK-source income and permanent establishment rules can still bite in specific cases — that part is worth a tax adviser's confirmation, not a website's.

Micro side-projects

Unincorporated hobby income

Casual or hobby income below HMRC's trading allowance, earned personally rather than through a company, involves no iXBRL. The moment you put activity through a limited company, though, the company files regardless of how small it is.

Commonly confused cases that DO have obligations

These are the ones people get wrong in the optimistic direction — assuming no filing when there is one.

LLPs

Accounts yes, CT600 no

LLPs deliver iXBRL-taggable accounts to Companies House every year — but don't file a CT600, because members are taxed directly. Half an obligation, often misjudged in both directions. More on LLPs.

Dormant companies

Still file every year

No trading doesn't mean no filing — dormant companies owe Companies House accounts annually, and penalties apply exactly as for trading companies. More on dormant companies.

Loss-making companies

Nil tax ≠ no return

A company that made a loss, or owes no Corporation Tax, still files its CT600 in iXBRL when a notice to file has been issued — and late-filing penalties (£200 from April 2026) apply even to nil returns.

How to verify your own position

Companies House

Are you on the register?

Search your name on the Companies House register. If your business isn't a registered company or LLP, you have no Companies House accounts obligation. If it is, accounts are due every year — check your filing deadline on your company's record.

HMRC

Has a notice to file been issued?

The CT600 obligation follows from being within Corporation Tax and receiving a notice to deliver a return. If you're unsure whether that applies to you, check your HMRC Business Tax Account or ask HMRC directly via gov.uk — don't guess in either direction.

This page is a plain-language orientation, not tax or legal advice. Obligations turn on your specific facts — registration status, residence, income types — and rules change. Confirm with Companies House, HMRC, or a qualified adviser.

Frequently asked questions

I'm a sole trader — do I need to worry about iXBRL at all?

No — sole traders report through Self Assessment, not Corporation Tax, and file nothing at Companies House. iXBRL doesn't apply to sole trader filings at all.

My company hasn't traded yet — does that mean no filing?

No — dormant companies still owe Companies House accounts annually, and a CT600 if HMRC has issued a notice. See our dormant companies page.

How do I check for certain whether my company has a filing obligation?

Search your company on the Companies House register to confirm your accounts deadline, and check your HMRC Business Tax Account or contact HMRC directly to confirm whether a notice to deliver a CT600 has been issued.
